We humans have two great habits. One is the habit of overthinking and second is the habit of lamenting over the past with the perks of worrying about the future. Spirituality and many spiritual teachers always impart the advice of living today, in the present. The power of now and today is very important. What’s gone is gone, embrace what’s coming. The mind is the seattle for thoughts.
Everyone has a past. By past I mean that we all grow through our experiences. Maybe relationship, marriage, job and family failures make us bitter and make us secluded. In the process of isolation, we like to go into a self-destructive mode and forget to remind ourselves that the mind need not wander into unnecessary thoughts or conflicts. Our mind everyday wanders into a series of unnecessary infinite thoughts based on the day to day experiences. The present state of your self is the existing state of the mind. If you wish to analyze your level of self-consciousness you have to live in the present.
According to Sigmund Freud, the father of Psychology and the psychologist and the master behind the Iceberg model of consciousness our Brain has the level of conscious, subconscious and unconscious. The level of consciousness is all about living in the present without worrying about the future. When we live in the present we free our mind from the clutter of the unwanted anxiety of the future. For example, if you have recently applied for a job interview and you think that you have faired well, but you don’t get a call from the recruiter. Your mind would be like,” why are they keeping me in a dangling position? Should I mail and ask them about my follow up process to be happening? Why are they taking so much time to revert back to me? Have they forgotten that they had taken my interview?
Basically overthinking makes you lack self-awareness. You need to be aware of your present surrounding. If on the day of your marriage, while taking the pheras you think about how you had promised your ex to be having a fancy marriage together, about all the proclaimed promises you are ruining the life of your fiancé, you are hurting yourself with the thoughts of your ex and you are giving attention to unwanted energy. Self-awareness does not only mean that you need to be physically active such as being aware of the calories you are consuming with a Mayo sandwich. Self-awareness means that you are mentally, physically and emotionally surrending your mind to the realms of peace. Every thought in your Brain is a perception.
Meditation teaches you to see the world timelessly without boundaries. Rabindranath Tagore, the great Nobel laureate had said, the mind should be without fear and the head should be held high. Have a mind that is not attached to the concept of attachment.
Let the present, past and the future walk in the bar. You keep your shot aside for the present because only the present can handle you, neither the past nor the future, and as I say Que Sera Sera (whatever will be will be) the future is not for us to see.
